Wow! It’s been a long time since my last post. Please forgive me, fellow chicken noobs. A lot has happened since my last post in August.

First, my chicks started laying eggs! I mean, I knew it would happen and that was the point but still! Who would’ve thought
Right around November was when they began laying but it wasn’t until just a few weeks ago in early January that the eggs have been coming out consistently bronzed, “egg-shaped” and clean. That last one is key. For most of the early days the eggs were a little sketchy – like the girls were just figuring it all out too.
There’s still one chicken that is producing some grey-ish, coarse oblong kind of eggs. I’m not sure what to do about that one.
Well, there’s a whole bunch more that I’ve figured out the hard way about cleaning, feeding and caring for the chickens. Who would’ve thought they eat lizards?? Or doves?? Aggressive for sure.
Also, one of the hens appears to be literally hen-pecked. There are what looks like scabs on her head that I just noticed the other day. No idea what to do. Time to hit the books and google.
Until the next time (and it won’t be long) – Go Chicken Noobs!
This is Fran. She came to us via a garage sale. She’s about one year old. When we first got her she was alone in the backyard as our chicks were still in the nice warm, lamp-light box in the house. Her perch of choice became my son’s workbench in our patio. Elevated, warm, away…

Found some FREE coop plans! I’m not sure who actually wrote the plans but the bottom has a link to Organic Gardening. The plans are for an “ark” style coop (or tractor) that allegedly holds 6-7 chickens. I’m not so sure if those are full-size hens or bantams. The dimensions are 6 feet long, 41?2…

My first ever house construction project: a chicken coop! Well, technically a chicken “tractor” or “ark” depending on where you live. One thing that made me happy? I bought plans here (affiliate link). I had read a lot of articles and looked at a lot of pictures and videos online before we began construction and…

My original title for this post was “Lodging for Our New Chicks.” Somehow that title didn’t quite capture the urgency and the immediacy of the situation. We had four chirping chicks who had, as yet, a place to lay their cute little fluffy beaks. What were we to do? I had been reading up on…

What the heck? Three days into this chicken raising thing we now have a full-grown, egg-laying machine! Faster than you could say “chick steroids” or “that can’t be a safe growth rate” I was now faced with a whole different game. I had just got our little girls all safe and snug in their light-bulb…

After literally months of waiting we picked up four little three day old chicks today. The girl at the hatchery totally had me at her mercy. Luckily, she was noble and knowledgeable, didn’t take advantage of my noob-iness and was incredibly helpful. We left with our 4 new girls, about 2 weeks worth of chick…
